Literature Fair Judging Sheets

Remember, students will need a trifold board to display at the fair and be prepared to tell the judges all about their books.  Below are the judging sheets.

LITERATURE FAIR INFORMATION

 1. Every project must have a backboard. This can be homemade or purchased from your school or a store. Just make sure the backboard can stand by itself when placed on a tabletop.

2. No project may occupy a space larger than 30” front to back and 36” side to side. Displays must fit on the table space provided.

3. Project utilizing any type of battery-operated devices in the display must use these items as an enhancement to the project. Electronic media may not be used in lieu of the oral presentation. Judges will deduct points from the overall score for failure to follow this guideline.

4. Each participant must give an oral presentation 3-5 minutes in length. It is suggested that both members speak in a pair or class project. (If a participant feels that 3-5 minutes is inadequate, he/she may need to add information to his/her project board.)

5. Projects may be entered as individual, pair, or class projects. A pair project may consist of only two people. A class project requires input of at least half of the class members and may only have two representatives to present the project.

6. A project must be a student’s work. Points will be deducted if resources and direct quotes are not credited to their original source. Blatant plagiarism may result in the project being disqualified. Parents, teachers, and other adults may give suggestions and guidance to the student; however, the student must perform all actual construction of the project and display.

7. Spelling and grammar are important and should be correct.

8. Be imaginative, neat, and creative.

9. Don’t wait until the last minute to begin your reading and do your research.

10. Place ribbons will be awarded to the first through third place winners in each category and division. All participants will receive a participation ribbon. Place Ribbons will be awarded according to a project’s score and merit, regardless of the number of projects in a particular category. The judging team has authority to decide if projects merit a First, Second, or Third place ribbon, based on their scoring of each project. Judges may recall students to interview in order to break ties.

11. The highest first place score of each category and division will be invited to present their projects at the Nicholas County Literature Fair which is held at NLCA. ONLY one project per category/division is invited to the County Literature Fair. A First-Place ribbon does not mean the project will move on to the county fair. The highest First-Place winners will be given notice of their opportunity to move on to the next level with a letter placed alongside their blue ribbon. Tie scores are not permitted to move on to the county fair.
